Topics Discussed

Developing the Impact Circle Show

Key Points & Insights

The main focus of all three meetings was bringing the Impact Circle show together. Participants continued developing their individual artistic pieces while working collectively on how to combine them into one coherent and engaging performance.

A longer version of the show is planned for future performances. For the debut performance on Sunday, 13 September, the group decided to create a shorter version involving the artists who have been consistently present during rehearsals and are able to commit to the performance.

The current running order is:

  1. Rap song highlighting the dangers of plastic

  2. Poem introducing Impact Circle and its purpose

  3. Contemporary dance portraying the conflict between nature and plastic

  4. Gogo-fusion song performed by Mr Zeze

  5. Sing-along song with a catchy chorus designed to help audiences remember the dangers plastic poses to our health and environment

  6. Impact Circle manifesto, performed collectively to close the show

The combination of contemporary and traditional forms is intentional: the show brings together different generations, artistic styles, and ways of communicating in order to reach a broad local audience.

Challenges or Open Questions

  • How to create a smooth flow between very different artistic pieces.

  • How to create a short version of the show without losing its core message.

  • Ensuring that only artists who can commit to rehearsals and the performance are included in the debut.

Solutions, Ideas, or Proposals

  • Develop a shorter debut version while continuing to build the longer show.

  • Use the manifesto as the common thread and closing statement.

  • Allow the individual artistic pieces to retain their own character while creating a clear overall narrative.

Action Items / Next Steps

  • Final rehearsals and polishing of all pieces.

  • Rehearse the transitions between the different elements.

  • Perform the short version of the show on 13 September.

  • Continue developing the longer version for future opportunities.

Reaching Young People Through Schools

Key Points & Insights

While the coordinator was away, other Impact Circle members continued the initiative’s outreach work. Together with Paschal and Amelia from Logos Circle, they conducted visits to schools and introduced young people to the project’s focus on plastic awareness and behaviour change.

This demonstrated that the initiative can continue moving forward and creating activities even when individual coordinators are not present.

Action Items / Next Steps

  • Continue exploring opportunities to reach young people through schools and other community settings.

  • Connect future school activities with the artistic work being developed by Impact Circle.

Building the Impact Circle Identity

Key Points & Insights

The group discussed and agreed on what participants would wear for the performance: Impact Circle T-shirts with black trousers.

Participants collectively contributed towards producing the T-shirts, including discussing what should be printed on them and where they could be produced.

The group also collectively contributed towards having a protective bag made for one of the traditional instruments used in the show, a zeze.

These practical decisions have helped strengthen the group’s shared identity and sense of ownership of the project.

Action Items / Next Steps

  • Finalize and produce the Impact Circle T-shirts.

  • Complete the protective bag for the zeze.

  • Use the shared visual identity for upcoming performances.

Community and Commitment

Key Points & Insights

The meetings continued to reinforce the sense of community that has developed within Impact Circle. Participants have been taking responsibility for different aspects of the project and contributing their own skills and resources.

The group is increasingly moving from discussing what Impact Circle could become to actually producing and performing something together.

Challenges or Open Questions

  • Maintaining momentum and regular participation as the group grows.

  • Balancing the different levels of commitment and availability among artists.

Solutions, Ideas, or Proposals

  • For the debut performance, work with the smaller group of artists who have demonstrated consistent commitment.

  • Continue involving the wider group in developing the longer-term show.

Winnable Issue Update

Winnable Issue

Raising awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastic and inspiring people to reduce their use through creative and engaging forms of communication.

Updates Since the Previous Circle

The awareness-raising work has moved from planning into production. The group now has a complete concept and running order for a live show, with individual pieces being developed and rehearsed.

The group has also continued outreach through school visits while preparing for its first public performance.

Blockers

The main challenge has been coordinating different artists and artistic disciplines while working towards a shared performance. Attendance and availability vary between participants, making it necessary to adapt the debut show to the artists who can commit consistently.

Planned Follow-up Actions

  • Finalize and perform the debut show on 13 September.

  • Continue developing the longer version of the performance.

  • Explore further opportunities to perform for existing community audiences.

  • Continue school and community outreach.

What We Learned / To Improve / New Ideas

Things That Worked Well

  • The group has successfully moved from brainstorming into producing tangible creative work.

  • Participants are increasingly taking ownership of different aspects of the initiative.

  • The combination of traditional and contemporary artistic forms gives the show a distinctive local identity.

  • The group was able to continue activities and school outreach while the coordinator was away.

  • Participants collectively contributed to practical project costs, demonstrating commitment and ownership.

  • Having a concrete performance date has helped focus the group and give the creative work a clear purpose.

Areas for Improvement

  • Improve coordination and communication around rehearsals and availability.

  • Allow sufficient time to rehearse transitions between the different artistic pieces.

  • Continue finding ways to involve the wider group while keeping public performances manageable.

New Ideas or Experiments to Try Next

  • Test the short version of the show with a live audience and use their reaction to refine the longer version.

  • Develop the show further based on what audiences respond to most strongly.

  • Explore additional opportunities to perform in schools, community events, and other venues where the group can reach young people.

Really good to see the show come together! The running order is strong. Opening with the rap on plastic, moving through the dance portraying nature against plastic, the Gogo-fusion piece, then the sing-along with a chorus designed to stick in people’s heads, and closing collectively with the manifesto. Blending traditional and contemporary forms is what will let this reach across generations in a way a lecture never could.

Break a leg on Sunday :raising_hands: Excited to hear how it goes.

Thanks. We’re excited. Today is the dress rehearsal and then we’re off to Jambiani (East Coast) on Sunday for the show. Yayyy!
