Why we’re using a local ticketing system, and why it matters
We chose 3ckets after reviewing over 20 local, international and crypto ticketing solutions
Day 1 is a highly crypto, privacy native audience, day 2 is (2000 attendees) is not native in these areas (and where most ticket sales and transactions have to be processed).
1. Legal compliance without data abuse
In Portugal, it’s illegal to sell tickets online to anyone under 16. That’s why age is requested for Day 2 tickets. This is a legal requirement. We collect only what’s required, and nothing more. Tickets also have to be verified to someone, preventing ticket touts, etc.
2. Local infrastructure over global monopolies
Instead of routing payments and personal data through large international ticketing platforms, we’re working with an independent Portuguese company that understands local law, tax, and consumer protections. This keeps data, money, and accountability closer to the event itself. As license has to be managed with the local council, we have to operate in this way.
3. Respecting local payments (including MB Way)
Around 70% of local attendees will use MB Way, Portugal’s payment system. Many international ticketing, or web3 ticketing platforms can’t support this. This platform can, without building surveillance profiles.
4. Minimal data, clear lifecycle
- No data resale
- No long-term retention
- All personal data is deleted after the event unless you explicitly opt in to hear from 3ckets
- No silent marketing lists, no dark patterns
5. Phone numbers are not the product
We’re aware many privacy-conscious people avoid systems that rely on phone numbers as persistent identifiers. This platform does not use phone numbers as a tracking mechanism or identity layer beyond what is strictly required for payment methods like MB Way. Even then, data is not reused or retained.
6. On-site functionality without surveillance
Your ticket QR code isn’t just a gate pass. It can optionally be used on-site for:
- Programme access
- Workshop sign-ups
- Cashless bar and merch payments
- If you choose not to top up with a regular card, we will have paper QR codes, cash/ crypto top up booth on site.
All of this is handled locally, without third-party ad tech, tracking pixels, or behavioral profiling. The bar and food systems are run directly by us, so revenue stays with the event.
7. Why this is critical for PS
Running our own bar and on-site payments is how we cover the real costs of the festival and remain independent. The ticketing system supports this without turning attendees into data exhaust.
In short
The dream solution doesn’t exist (yet), hopefully we can work to build something better. We hope to workshop during the event how other solutions for event promoters, organisers can be improved.
We chose the one that supports local infrastructure, and keeps control with the community, not platforms built on extraction.
