We opened LP-0018: OpenStreetMap Integration, a new λPrize that puts the world’s open map data on the Logos stack. Mirror verified OpenStreetMap extracts in Logos Storage, register them on-chain, and let anyone discover and download them without trusting a single host.
The problem
OpenStreetMap extracts power offline navigation, GIS tooling, and privacy-preserving map apps. But getting them still means going to a central host such as Geofabrik. If that host is slow, blocked, or simply gone, every app downstream loses its maps, and nothing lets a community keep its own verified copy and share it.
Maps are exactly the kind of data you want to have when the network around you is unreliable or censored. They should be as durable as the communities that rely on them.
What we’re looking for
LP-0018 funds an OSM distribution system for Logos: a Basecamp app that hosts and downloads map regions, and a reusable OSM registry SDK/module that other Basecamp apps can build on.
- Fetch → store → register → download: pull a region’s PBF from Geofabrik, store it in Logos Storage, and register it on-chain in an OSM registry LEZ program built with SPEL
- Content-addressed integrity: every file is identified by its CID, checked against Geofabrik’s published checksum at import time, so a downloaded file can be trusted without a round-trip to Geofabrik
- Region discovery and update checks over a fixed, non-overlapping set of regions (countries, plus subregions for the US, India, China, and Russia), so the same geography is never hosted or counted twice
- Bulk hosting and local import of PBF files you already have
- An on-chain registry, queryable by region, by parent, and by CID, with batch registration
- A standalone SDK/module so any Basecamp app can resolve a region to its CID and use the map data, without needing the distribution app
- Basecamp app GUI and CLI, running end-to-end against Logos testnet 0.3 (
https://testnet.lez.logos.co), with no mandatory centralised services beyond Geofabrik as the canonical snapshot source
Map viewers, routing, geocoding, and other apps that use the data are deliberately out of scope. This prize builds the distribution layer; what gets built on top is open to everyone.
Adoption criteria
Like the other recent λPrizes, LP-0018 is judged on real use, not just the build:
- Coverage: at least 15 countries from the predefined set, and at least 25 verified region entries in total, hosted in Logos Storage and registered on testnet 0.4. Evaluators fetch each CID and check its hash against Geofabrik
- Ecosystem reuse: at least 5 independent modules, including at least 3 Basecamp apps, using the SDK to discover or fetch regions, each by developers independent of the submitting team, with genuine commit histories
On top of that, we look favorably on redundant mirroring (the same region hosted by more than 5 distinct operators) and on testimonials from people who have actually hosted or used a region.
Coverage and reuse both take other people, so you can’t finish the build first and chase adoption afterwards. Release early, get regions mirrored, get app developers on the SDK, and keep building as usage grows.
Talking with potential users is part of the work, and it doesn’t stop after launch day. Builders, keep coming back to this thread throughout the build: share previews, ask which regions people want, and let the feedback shape what you build.
Details
- Total prize: $1,500
- Effort: Medium
- Evaluation: first-come-first-served against all success criteria; the first submission to meet everything wins

Users: which regions would you want mirrored first, and what would you do with offline, verifiable maps? Tell us below.
Hosts: willing to mirror your country or region in Logos Storage? Say so here; independent mirrors are part of what this prize needs.
App developers: thinking of an offline map viewer, a routing tool, or a POI search on Logos? Tell us what you’d need from the SDK; independent Basecamp apps on top of it are part of what this prize needs too.
Builders: if you’re working toward LP-0018, post your progress in this thread and keep checking in with users as you go.
