Context
The Urbe group is the main Italian pole of Web3 builders. The Urbe group has since organized countless onboarding and development activities for the crypto commons (bootcamps, hackathons, conferences) and is now organising the annual Farcaster conference.
In this context, we are drawing our attention to the Why (the very essence) of the Farcaster ecosystem: The social media problem, pervasive extractive algorithm, the ‘enshittification’ of online services - specifically organising two Logos Circles, with a partly novel approach.
- This Circle (April 8th) was an Online X Space, streamed live at the Urbe Hub in Rome, framed as “Road to Farcon” - i.e. to help us maximise the exploration of our Why once we’re all together in Rome.
- Our next Circle will be Sunday May 3rd, just before Farcon (May 4-5th) and will be hosted in-person only at the Urbe Hub.
Participants
Key members of Farcaster, Neynar (company who owns the IP connected to Farcaster), the Farcaster Intern, members from adjacent communities that are very active on Farcaster, like Civil from Nouns/dWeb… or Luciano from Kismet Casa and Base House… Statuette, DuoDo Music… Also, Sterlin from the Logos Movement Team… Many Urbe members connected from the Urbe Hub…
Event Structure & Topics Discussed
Start Time: 7:00pm End Time: 8:15pm
Welcome - I introduced the concept, invited anyone to come on stage to speak introduced Farcaster and its values, introduced Logos and its values, framed the conversation, drew people’s attention to this thread (below).
Introductions - The conversation kicked off between myself and Limone (co-founder of Urbe and lead organiser of Farcon Rome) as people gradually came on stage over time.
Technology and Winnable Issues - Our winnable issue for the 2-circle-mini-series are to effectively answer these three questions:
- How should we shape Farcaster going forward, as a community?
- To CROPS or not to CROPS?
- How can we use Farcon Rome as a catalyst for the Farcaster ecosystem?
Outcomes
-
Identifying the root principle of Farcaster - eliminating user lock-in, no longer possible, as a mechanism that generates incentive misalignment and pushes for extractive behaviours by developers at the app layer.
-
Deep discussion on the current delicate inflection point for the Farcaster ecosystem, renewed focus on builders, building services for real people, upon a foundation of no-lock-in.
-
Active DeSoc (decentralized social media) enthusiasts drawing comparisons between Farcaster, Nostr and Bluesky - suggesting to invite members of other communities to Farcon
-
Interventions from Grin (Neynar) on what their direction is (think of it like the equivalent of the Ethereum Foundation for Ethereum), interventions from the Farcaster Intern as a neutral observer and collector of ongoing history of the ecosystem, interventions from Statuette, representing an OG member of the community, present from the start, highly influential.
-
Discussion to hone in on the fine line when it comes to CROPS - the right balance being in line with Farcaster’s founding principle of being “sufficiently decentralized”
The Next Chapter of Logos Rome Circle
Now we have set the stage, defined the scope and brought key members of the ecosystem to think deeply about The Why of Farcaster - how do we advance civil liberties with this platform. This is the perfect time to have this discussion, given the recent acquisition of the Farcaster Client and adjacent IP to Neynar, and the subsequent pivot back to the roots of supporting builders on the platform.
On May 3rd, for our next circle, we will all meet in person with the same people we met online for this circle, and have a follow-up sobering conversation ahead of Farcon officially kicking off the next day - with the goal of setting the right intention for the conference, in answering our winnable issue:
- How should we shape Farcaster going forward, as a community?
- To CROPS or not to CROPS?
- How can we use Farcon Rome as a catalyst for the Farcaster ecosystem?
