Background

At Circle #1, the group talked through real problems facing the city, and waste management came up as one of them. Circle #2 was about turning that into action, a first Winnable Issue instead of another discussion.

Why Kharghar Hills?

One of Navi Mumbai’s last real green spaces, a natural water catchment people here walk and trek on every week. It’s also been under pressure, quarrying, neglect and like most well loved trails, the foot traffic leaves behind trash nobody’s picking up.

The Activity: Kharghar Hills Trail Cleanup

Seven of us were at the Kharghar Hills trekking entry by 7:45, gloves on, trash bags ready, and started walking the trail, picking up trash as we went, plastic bottles, glass bottles, plastic bags, food wrappers, drink cans, whatever we found.

As bags filled up, we placed them near the trail, somewhere easy to spot, and kept moving forward. Along the way we met strangers coming from the other direction, we asked if they could carry a bag down with them and without a second thought they said yes, wished us well and carried on.

Somewhere in the middle we took a short break for water, the sun was already out and it was starting to wear us down. Then we kept going.

We came down at a different point on the other side and from there made our way back to the starting point. We got there carrying a handful of bags ourselves, the rest had already made it down with the help of strangers we’d asked along the way, sitting right where we’d left them earlier that morning.

By 12:30, we were done. 30+ bags of trash off a trail that gets walked by hundreds of people every week.

After, the group went for lunch together, and that turned into the real planning session for Circle #3.

What worked

Leaving bags visibly near the trail and asking people walking toward us to carry them down worked well, nobody hesitated, people just said yes and kept walking. We placed everything at one clear spot, making it easy for the NMMC team to pick up the next morning.

Why this Circle mattered
It’s easy to talk about a city’s problems in a room. This was the first time the group actually stood in the problem and strangers chose to help without being asked twice.

What’s next
Not decided yet. Could be another cleanup, maybe Juhu or Girgaon Chowpatty, or the group could move toward something like fitness or mental health, that came up at lunch too.

Circle #3 will settle it.
