3. Identifying Local Challenges in Katsina State

Discussion Summary

A significant portion of the meetup was dedicated to listening to participants and identifying the most pressing challenges affecting communities across Katsina State. Every participant was given the opportunity to share personal experiences, observations, and concerns from their respective communities.

The discussions revealed several recurring issues that require collective action and community-driven solutions.

Key Challenges Identified

1. Water Scarcity in Daura and Surrounding Communities

Participants highlighted the persistent shortage of access to clean and safe water in several communities within Daura and its surrounding areas. Many densely populated communities continue to rely on unsafe or unreliable water sources, making it difficult for residents to meet their daily domestic needs.

The lack of adequate water infrastructure has contributed to poor hygiene, increased health risks, and reduced quality of life, particularly for women and children who often travel long distances to fetch water.

Ideas Discussed

Conduct a community needs assessment to identify the most affected areas.

Advocate for the provision and rehabilitation of boreholes and other sustainable water infrastructure.

Engage government agencies, development partners, NGOs, and private organizations to support community water projects.

2. Drug Abuse Among Young People

People in the community are really worried about how many young people in Katsina State are getting into trouble with drugs. They think it’s a big problem that’s affecting lots of things, like how well kids do in school, whether they can get a job, how they get along with their families, and even how safe the community is. It’s also making it harder for young people to reach their full potential and be productive members of society.

The group agreed that addressing this issue requires both preventive education and accessible rehabilitation services.

Ideas Discussed

* Launch community and school-based awareness campaigns on the dangers of substance abuse.

* Partner with rehabilitation and mental health centers to support individuals seeking recovery.

* Organize mentorship and youth engagement programmers that promote healthy lifestyles and positive alternatives.

3. Youth Unemployment and Skills Development

The meeting pointed out that young people not having jobs is a big problem in the state. The people at the meeting said that even though there are jobs available in some areas, a lot of young people don’t have the skills they need to get hired. They’re missing the practical and technical skills that are necessary to succeed in the job market today. This is making it hard for them to compete with others who are looking for work.

To fill this gap, members suggested creating a program that teaches people new skills in a way that lasts. This program would combine hands-on training with guidance from experienced mentors and sharing knowledge with others who are also learning.

Ideas Discussed

* Organize professional and vocational skills acquisition programmers in high-demand fields.

* Bring in seasoned pros and experts from the field to lead hands-on training sessions that give people the skills they need.

* Introduce a Train One, Teach Many models, where every participant who successfully acquires a skill and secures employment or establishes a business commits to mentoring and training other young people within their community, creating a sustainable cycle of knowledge transfer and empowerment.

4. Environmental Health and Sanitation

Participants also discussed growing environmental challenges affecting many communities, particularly poor sanitation practices and environmental degradation.

Challenges Identified

* Poor waste management and indiscriminate waste disposal.

* Limited public awareness of environmental health.

* Increasing deforestation in surrounding communities.

* Lack of coordinated community-led environmental action.

Ideas Discussed

* Organize periodic community clean-up campaigns.

* Launch tree-planting initiatives to promote environmental restoration.

* Conduct environmental awareness and behavioral change campaigns in schools and communities.

* Encourage community participation in protecting and maintaining public spaces.

5. Women Empowerment and Girl-Child Education

Members highlighted the need to strengthen support for women and girls, particularly those living in rural and underserved communities.

Participants observed that many girls remain out of school due to socioeconomic barriers, while women often have limited access to educational opportunities, vocational training, financial resources, and leadership platforms.

The group emphasized that empowering women and ensuring access to education for every girl child are essential for achieving sustainable community development.

Ideas Discussed

* Advocate for increased enrolment and retention of girls in school.

* Develop educational support initiatives, including mentorship and scholarship opportunities where possible.

* Organize community awareness campaigns promoting the importance of girl-child education and women’s empowerment.

* Promote vocational training, entrepreneurship, and leadership development programmes for women and young girls.

The talks really showed how important it is for the community to come together and solve problems on their own. It was clear that the people of Logos Circle Katsina are dedicated to finding issues they can actually make a difference with and creating solutions that will really work and last, all by themselves.

The group decided that from now on, their meetings will be about turning their ideas into real projects that can make a difference. They want to work with local leaders, the government, and other organizations to make this happen. By teaming up, they hope to create stronger communities, give people more power, and make a lasting change in Katsina State. They believe that by working together, they can achieve more and have a bigger impact on people’s lives. This way, they can build a better future for everyone in the community.

Winnable Issue Update

Following extensive discussions, members identified several critical challenges affecting communities across Katsina State, including water scarcity, drug abuse, youth unemployment, environmental sanitation, and women empowerment.

While water scarcity was unanimously recognized as one of the most pressing challenges—particularly in Daura and surrounding communities—the group acknowledged that addressing this issue requires substantial financial resources, technical expertise, and long-term engagement with government agencies and development partners. As such, it was agreed that this initiative will remain a long-term strategic objective of Logos Circle Katsina.

In line with the Logos Circle principle of focusing on winnable issues—projects that are practical, community-driven, cost-effective, and capable of delivering meaningful impact within a short period—the Circle agreed to prioritize initiatives that can be implemented immediately with available resources.

Priority Winnable Issue

Community Environmental Sanitation and Awareness Campaign

The Circle identified environmental sanitation as the most suitable first winnable issue due to its immediate relevance, affordability, and potential to improve public health while encouraging active community participation.

Proposed Activities

  • Organize community clean-up exercises in selected neighbourhoods.

  • Conduct public awareness campaigns on proper waste disposal and environmental hygiene.

  • Partner with community leaders and local volunteers to promote cleaner and healthier environments.

  • Launch a tree-planting initiative to encourage environmental conservation and beautification.

  • Youth Skills Development Initiative: Develop a sustainable skills acquisition programmed that equips young people with employable skills through professional training and a peer-to-peer mentorship model, where each beneficiary is encouraged to train others, creating a multiplier effect across the community.

By starting with achievable, high-impact initiatives, Logos Circle Katsina aims to build momentum, strengthen community trust, and establish a strong foundation for addressing larger and more complex challenges such as water scarcity in the future.
