Winnable Issue Update
AUGUST 2026 winnable issues report
Overview
August 2026 was a month of meaningful community impact for Logos Circle Katsina, with two major community interventions focused on education and public health. The Circle implemented a 3-week Summer Learning Programme for primary and secondary school students and subsequently led a Diphtheria Awareness and Prevention Campaign in response to the growing concern around diphtheria cases in the community.
In addition, through a collaboration between Logos Circle Katsina and WellCare Telemedics, approximately 50 people received free online medical consultations, further extending access to healthcare within the community.
1. Summer Learning Programme
One of the major activities undertaken in August was a 3-week Summer Learning Programme designed to support pupils and secondary school students in improving their academic performance.
The programme was developed after identifying Mathematics and English Language as two of the most challenging subjects for many students, particularly in relation to their performance in secondary school examinations.
Programme Approach
To address these challenges, Logos Circle Katsina engaged four experienced teachers, consisting of:
-
Two Mathematics teachers
-
Two English Language teachers
The teachers were selected based on their strong teaching experience and proven track records.
A pre-test was conducted before the commencement of the programme to assess the students’ baseline knowledge. Following the three-week learning period, a post-test was conducted to measure the progress achieved.
Impact
The assessment showed an average improvement of approximately 60% in students’ performance compared with their baseline assessment.
The programme therefore provided an opportunity to strengthen students’ understanding of difficult concepts, improve their confidence in Mathematics and English, and address learning gaps during the long vacation period.
2. Diphtheria Awareness and Prevention Campaign
Following the identification of an increasing number of suspected and confirmed diphtheria cases in the community, Logos Circle Katsina quickly recognized the need for increased public awareness and preventive action.
At the time of the campaign, approximately 15 recorded cases had been identified, with additional individuals placed under isolation and monitoring.
In response, Logos Circle Katsina initiated a community-wide Diphtheria Awareness Campaign, making it one of the first organized community-led efforts to respond publicly to the situation.
Major Activities
The campaign included:
Public Awareness
-
Dissemination of information on diphtheria, its symptoms, transmission and prevention.
-
Community sensitization on the importance of early presentation to health facilities.
-
Encouragement of vaccination and other preventive measures.
Collaboration with Primary Healthcare Services
Logos Circle Katsina collaborated with Primary Health Care (PHC) services to support vaccination activities targeting both children and adults, helping to promote protection against the disease.
Radio Awareness Programme
The Circle also partnered with a radio station to conduct a public awareness programme on diphtheria.
The radio programme generated significant public engagement, with many members of the community participating and sending messages of appreciation for the initiative.
Printed Awareness Materials
Educational flyers were produced and distributed across hospitals and other strategic locations to ensure that accurate information about diphtheria reached a wider audience.
The campaign also included plans for continued hospital-based presentations and community education sessions to sustain awareness beyond the initial campaign.
Impact
The campaign helped to:
-
Increase community awareness about diphtheria.
-
Encourage early recognition of symptoms.
-
Promote vaccination and preventive practices.
-
Connect members of the community with available healthcare services.
-
Create a platform for continued health education through hospitals and radio.
3. Free Telemedicine Consultations
As part of the collaboration between Logos Circle Katsina and WellCare Telemedics, approximately 50 people received free medical consultations through the WellCare Telemedics online platform during the month.
This initiative was implemented following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Logos Circle Katsina and WellCare Telemedics.
The partnership demonstrates the potential of combining community based initiatives with digital healthcare solutions to improve access to medical advice, particularly for individuals who may face barriers to accessing healthcare services physically.
SEPTEMBER 2026 WINNABLE PROJECT
BACK-TO-SCHOOL EDUCATION SUPPORT INITIATIVE
Background and Rationale
For the month of September 2026, Logos Circle Katsina proposes a Back-to-School Education Support Initiative as its Winnable Project. The project builds directly on the educational concerns and priorities identified in our previous monthly report and is particularly timely as September marks the beginning of a new academic session.
Through our engagement with the community, we have identified the significant number of children who are either out of school or at risk of dropping out due to financial and socioeconomic challenges. This situation is particularly concerning because prolonged absence from formal education can increase children’s vulnerability to early marriage, child labour, substance abuse and other social challenges.
In response, Logos Circle Katsina seeks to develop a practical and sustainable model that will support vulnerable children to return to and remain in school.
Project Goal
The overall goal of the initiative is to support vulnerable children in returning to formal education while promoting greater awareness among parents and community members about the importance of education for both boys and girls.
Key Objectives
The project will focus on the following objectives:
-
Support at least five vulnerable children to return to school by covering their full tuition and other essential school-related costs for the academic year.
-
Create awareness among parents and community members on the importance of formal education and the long-term benefits of keeping children in school.
-
Promote equal educational opportunities for both boys and girls, with particular attention to children who are at greater risk of being excluded from formal education.
-
Develop a community-supported education model that can potentially be expanded to support more children beyond the initial beneficiaries.
-
Mobilize community members, partners and the Logos Network to contribute towards sustainable educational support for vulnerable children.
Proposed Intervention
The initiative will adopt a targeted approach to ensure that support reaches children with genuine educational and financial needs.
The Circle will:
-
Identify and assess vulnerable children who are currently out of school or at high risk of dropping out.
-
Work with parents/guardians and relevant schools to verify the educational needs of selected beneficiaries.
-
Select a minimum of five children as the initial beneficiaries.
-
Provide payment for their full academic-year tuition fees.
-
Where possible, support other essential educational requirements that may constitute barriers to school attendance.
-
Conduct community awareness activities emphasizing the importance of formal education.
-
Encourage parents and guardians to prioritize the education of both male and female children.
-
Document the beneficiaries and monitor their continued attendance and participation throughout the academic session.
Community Mobilization and Existing Support
The initiative has already generated encouraging interest within Logos Circle Katsina. A significant number of Circle members have expressed their commitment through monetary contributions towards the implementation of the project.
This early commitment demonstrates strong local ownership of the initiative and provides a foundation upon which the project can be built.
However, given the financial requirements associated with supporting children for an entire academic year, additional support from the wider Logos Network will be important to achieving the project’s full potential.
We therefore seek the support of Logos in strengthening this initiative and enabling the Circle to reach its target of returning at least five vulnerable children to school.
Expected Outcomes
By the end of the initial implementation phase, we expect to achieve:
-
At least five vulnerable children enrolled or re-enrolled in school.
-
Full-year tuition support provided to the selected beneficiaries.
-
Increased awareness among parents on the importance of formal education.
-
Greater community recognition of the importance of keeping children, particularly girls, in school.
-
Increased community participation in supporting vulnerable children’s education.
-
Establishment of a replicable model for future education-support interventions in the community.
Sustainability
Although the immediate target is to support five children, the long-term ambition is to establish a community-driven education support model that can be expanded as additional resources become available.
The Circle will continue to engage members, local stakeholders, schools, parents, philanthropists and the wider Logos Network to mobilize resources for additional beneficiaries in subsequent academic sessions.
The project will also maintain records of supported children and monitor their educational progress, allowing the Circle to measure the impact of the intervention and improve the model over time.
Conclusion
The Back-to-School Education Support Initiative represents a timely and practical response to one of the pressing challenges identified within our community. With the commencement of the new academic session in September, there is an immediate opportunity to prevent vulnerable children from remaining outside the formal education system.
Logos Circle Katsina has already demonstrated its commitment through the initial mobilization of community members and financial contributions. With additional support from the Logos Network, we believe this initiative can successfully return at least five children to school and create a foundation for a larger, sustainable education-support programme.
Our September Winnable Project is therefore not only about paying school fees; it is about restoring opportunities, keeping children in school, and investing in the future of our community.
