Our first Circle meetup was successfully held as an interactive and community-centred event. The event brought together people from different backgrounds to discuss the problems they observe in their communities and learn about the Logos vision and mission.
PARTICIPANTS
We had:
- 40 attendees
- The backgrounds of these attendees were diverse. We had software engineers, founders, entrepreneurs, students, content creators, teachers, and community leaders, amongst others, in attendance.
EVENT STRUCTURE
The event was intentionally not structured as a strictly formal programme. It was an open gathering where everyone could speak freely, listen to one another, and think about how we can identify these problems and work towards practical solutions.
We began the event with a self-introduction session. Attendees introduced themselves, shared what they do, and spoke about the problems in their communities. This helped us to create a relaxed and participatory environment. It also allowed participants to connect, setting the tone for practical discussions focused on community issues.
ISSUES DISCUSSED
After the introduction, we discussed these very critical problems affecting our environment and communities. Among the major issues discussed were internet access, electricity, food security, unemployment, housing, disability inclusion, waste disposal and management, and the lack of existing platforms where people can share ideas, collaborate, or discuss community problems openly.
Internet access and electricity were identified as important challenges affecting individuals, businesses, students, and communities. Access to the internet is now closely connected to education, work, digital skills, business opportunities, and access to information. However, poor or unstable electricity also limits productivity and makes it difficult for people to fully participate in these digital opportunities.
Food security was another key issue raised during the discussion. Participants acknowledged that access to affordable and adequate food remains a major concern for many people and households.
Unemployment and disability inclusion were also discussed as serious concerns. Participants noted that many young people and skilled individuals are willing to work but do not have enough opportunities. The conversation also highlighted the challenges faced by people living with disabilities, especially those who already have skills or are willing to acquire skills but lack the opportunity, support systems, or platforms to develop those skills and apply them meaningfully. Participants further noted that many people living with disabilities are often neglected, even when they have valuable abilities or the desire to learn and contribute.
Housing was also raised as a major concern. The discussion focused on how many people find it difficult to get decent accommodation due to high rent, inflated housing prices, and the increasing cost of securing a place to live. This was identified as a serious issue affecting individuals and families within the community.
Waste disposal and management were also discussed. Participants observed that poor waste management affects the environment, public health, and the general quality of life within communities.
INTRODUCTION TO LOGOS & LOGOS CIRCLES.
After the community discussions, Logos and Logos Circles were introduced to the attendees. The intro focused on what Logos is, our core values, movement, and why it is relevant to bringing solutions to the problems we’ve discussed earlier.
I also gave a brief onboarding session for attendees who were not blockchain natives. I made them understand that the blockchain is not just about crypto and financial speculations. It can be used as a tool for coordination, participation, identity, governance, and community-driven solutions.
COMMUNITY VOICES & HARD ASKS
Although the issues raised were important and valid, we did not focus on providing immediate solutions. The goal was to first identify the problems and understand them from different perspectives and experiences.
I made a proposal, which was accepted and agreed upon, that there was a need to go beyond our Circle gathering and engage directly with people in our local community, as boardroom discussions may differ from community realities.
Hence, we decided to move into the streets to chat with locals. Ask them about the problems they are facing, the issues they believe should be solved, and areas where they feel the government, institutions, or existing systems have neglected them.
A hard ask was made for volunteers who would be interested in participating in this initiative. The response was encouraging, as several people indicated interest. A volunteer form is being prepared and will be shared with the community before the end of this week.
NEXT STEPS…
We are currently setting up structures and modalities for the next meetup/interview with locals. The plan is to first convene as a group, then move into the streets and surrounding community areas.
We’ll return to our meeting point after the interviews to enable us to review the information and feedback gathered from the activity. The goal is to compare the issues raised during our first meetup with the responses we got from the locals during the interviews, then begin to identify the most important and achievable problem(s)
This will help our Circle determine a possible “Winnable Issue".
POST-EVENT FEEDBACK AND NOTES.
Feedback since the Logos community gathering has been encouraging. Participants said they enjoyed the event, especially because it felt informal, inclusive, and different from conventional events. Some take homes:
- Starting with introductions and community problem-sharing worked well. It helped participants feel relaxed before introducing Logos and the technical parts.
- Some participants have asked how they can get involved, while others have asked when the next event will be held.
- Some developers and builders have also made enquiries on how they can build on the Logos stack. Developer documentation and Basecamp resources have been shared with them. In the coming weeks, we hope to host a dedicated session for builders and technical teams interested in building on the ecosystem.
- Materials used for the event included Logos stickers, sticky notes, pamphlets, zines, a roll-up banner, and branded T-shirts for the volunteer team. The volunteer team supported logistics, camera coverage, registration, communication, and welfare.
What Worked Well
- The informal and inclusive structure worked very well. We will continue with this format in subsequent meetups unless there is a need to adjust it.
- The choice of venue was suitable. It accommodated everyone, and there were no complaints about overcrowding or lack of space.
- Combining Luma check-in with a physical registration sheet helped us take accurate records of participants, including their work backgrounds, which were not captured on Luma.
- There was active participation from attendees during the discussions, especially during the community problem-sharing session.
Areas to Improve
- We may need to provide a public address system to amplify participants’ voices, especially during open discussions. This was not considered initially because the plan was to make the event as informal as possible, but some attendees were not loud enough to be heard clearly across the room.
- We may also consider getting a projector for future events to give attendees a clearer visual understanding of the ideas, examples, and technical explanations being discussed.
- Event timing may also be reviewed, as some participants suggested that afternoon or evening sessions may work better on weekends.
- Pens will be provided at future events so participants can easily write down ideas and practical issues that can be addressed on sticky notes. Sticky notes were shared during the event, but not everyone submitted theirs.
Overall, the event went well, the feedback has been positive, and there is strong interest in building on the momentum.
