The Circle agreed that educating communities on genotype status can help reduce the incidence of sickle cell disease while improving informed health decisions.

The genotype and sickle cell campaign is your strongest first pick, precisely because you’ve already scoped it with a number and a timeline. I’d put your energy there, deliver it, and let that first win build the momentum and credibility to take on the others one at a time.

A tip that could save you months… several circles are already running health outreaches very close to yours. Kano has a school health and hygiene campaign, and Wukari (Taraba) is doing a malaria and typhoid prevention outreach next month, both partnering with local health bodies and NYSC groups. I’d genuinely love to connect you with them so you can share partners, materials, and what works, rather than starting from scratch.

One thing worth knowing on the sickle cell campaign specifically… genotype awareness touches on sensitive personal and family decisions, so partnering with hospitals or labs that can offer proper genetic counselling alongside the testing, not just the result, will make the outreach far more responsible and impactful. I have already reached out to the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientist Gombe state Chapter and the Nigerian Medical Association to partner in carrying out the genotype testing.
