Overview

Our July gathering brought together 12 participants, 10 of them returning members, which speaks to the strong core this circle has built. This session was a turning point for us. Alongside good news on our medical fundraiser and updates on our ongoing projects, we defined winnable issues for this month and next, both focused on getting out of the room and doing something directly for people in our community.

The Surgery Was a Success

We opened with the best news we could have asked for.

The parent of one of our members, who we have been fundraising for through FundBrave, had their surgery yesterday, and it went well

This happened because people showed up. A genuine thank you to everyone who contributed, shared the campaign, or supported in any way, both within the circle and beyond it. Whether you gave a lot or a little, you were part of this.

This is exactly why we built FundBrave, and seeing it work for one of our own has been the most meaningful proof of the idea so far. It is also a reminder of what this circle is really about: we are not only here to build together, we are here for each other when it matters most.

Zeqah Study Group

We shared progress on Zeqah, our peer-to-peer academic support structure for students at the University of Benin, which continues to run on campus. We will be gathering student feedback at the end of the semester to keep improving it.

This Month’s Winnable Issue: Exam Season Food Support

Our winnable issue for this month came out of something we noticed on the ground. Students are deep in exam preparation, and for many of them the food provisions they came to school with have run out at exactly the point they need to concentrate most. A hungry student cannot prepare properly for an exam, and this is a real and immediate barrier to their performance.

So the circle agreed to buy and provide the specific food provisions students need to get through this period. We discussed how to carry it out, who to reach, and what is needed, and preparations are currently underway.

It is narrow, local, and something we can complete and see the result of within weeks, which is exactly what a winnable issue should be.

Next Month’s Winnable Issue: Hospital Bill Support

Looking ahead, we agreed that next month we will go to a hospital and help a few people who are unable to settle their bills, contributing whatever amount we are able to.

Many people in our community remain in hospital or delay treatment simply because they cannot clear a bill, and even a partial contribution can be the difference between someone going home and someone staying stuck. Rather than meeting to talk about it, the meetup itself will be the outreach.

Clean Nigeria Roadshow

We also discussed the Clean Nigeria Roadshow, the nationwide cleanup campaign Logos Circles is running in partnership with Aquari, including how activists are rewarded for taking part, and how our circle can join a cleanup when the opportunity reaches us.

Closing

We finished the session sharing a meal together, which has become one of the parts of our gatherings we value most.
