Hey Logos community,
Following on Logos Circle Twitter Space last Tuesday -subject starts at about one hour-, I want to suggest a Logos Circle around something close to my heart: bees, beekeepers, and the messy truth about our food system in Europe and probably other parts of the world.
We all know bees are vital. Beehives are also an example of a decentralized system well organized for proficient decision making… But they’re getting crushed by at least three things here in Europe:
- The Varroa mite, been here for decades
- The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) imported from Asia and quickly invading the whole of Europe,
- And, mainly, synthetic pesticides that weaken bees and poison our land.
About pesticides, their lobby make continuous pressure at the EU Parliament. Plus, they publish pseudo-science industry-funded articles. For example, Wageningen University, which ran a recent study, admitted it was a “mistake” that created a conflict of interest (source).
Another example: groups like Corporate Europe Observatory show how these companies are now using farmer protests as cover to push for more deregulation, not less (read more).
So what can we do?
- Connect with local beekeepers
- Support pesticide-free farms
- Learn and share knowledge
