IFT Proposal: Relational Contract DAOs: Pacta

Relational Contract DAOs: Pacta

I submitted to info at free technology a proposal for BrightID/Aura to join the IFT portfolio. Now I have another proposal which I would be equally interested to work on, if you’ll consider it.

I’d like to extend a DAO platform (e.g. Aragon) to serve as a template for Relational Contract DAOs.

When entities (DAOs, legacy orgs, legacy states, individuals) would like to interact, it benefits them to create a joint DAO (a Relational Contract DAO) to keep an immutable account of their negotiations, proposals, and the reasons behind their proposals. If this sounds familiar, it’s because it was inspired by “Farewell to Westphalia.”

In addition to the use cases put forth in the book for RCDs, I would like to propose another. I want to enable organizations and individuals to create their own presentations of rights, declaring the relationship they’d like to have with another entity (for example, a legacy state). An RCD is formed with such a presentation, even if it’s unilateral to start. Other people or entities who want the same relationship are free to join and adopt the same presentation. Many people joining (similar to a class action) increases efficiency and therefore the likelihood of a response from the target entity. When the target entity joins, the formal process of negotiation begins with the presentation as the starting point.

For an example of a presentation of rights related to data ownership, privacy, and digital identity for individuals, irrespective of their physical location, see this Idea I posted on Updraft.

I see an RCD as one of several DAOs a person or entity could join to increase their sovereignty and engage with new and legacy entities in a transparent and decentralized manner. This is a better way to create laws, treaties, and agreements than relying on elected representatives.

Qualifications

Allow me to make a case for why I’m the right person to work on this for IFT. I have a long history with DAOs. I received a grant from Aragon in 2018 to build BrightID as a module to create the first one-person-one-vote DAOs. I launched the first DAO registered as a legal non-profit, the first instances of sub-DAOs, and the second blockchain (after ETH Mainnet) to support DAOs. I joined Gitcoin when it transitioned to a DAO, as a steward in the first cohort. I worked on 1Hive’s Celeste–specifically the integration with BrightID to limit jurors to one slot per person per cycle.

I’m a passionate builder with a penchant for privacy technologies. I would have no problem building what I’ve proposed as a solo “team,” but I also have experience leading teams and would welcome collaborators. I’ve participated in open-source software development since 1998 when I built the team chess module and an open-source chess engine for the Free Internet Chess Server.

Proposed Name

In fitting with the feel of the other technologies in the IFT portfolio, I propose the name Pacta for this public good startup.
