Overview
Our June gathering brought together 16 participants for a hands-on, technical session. The highlight was a Logos node workshop, alongside updates on our ongoing projects (Zeqah and Iris) and the medical support fundraiser for one of our members.
Logos Node Workshop
The centerpiece of this month’s circle was a hands-on Logos node workshop. We walked members through what a node does and how to set one up, and a few participants successfully ran a node on their own systems during the session.
The main challenge that surfaced was keeping a node online 24/7. Running it on a personal laptop or PC isn’t sustainable, since members need those machines for other work and can’t dedicate them to staying online around the clock.
I suggested using a Raspberry Pi as a low-power, dedicated device to run the node. But this runs into a very real local constraint: Nigeria does not have a constant electricity supply, so keeping a Pi powered 24/7 is difficult.
So we brainstormed, and the circle landed on a genuinely exciting solution: building a Raspberry Pi node powered by a rechargeable lithium battery that can keep the device running for up to 48 hours without mains electricity. This would make it viable to run a reliable node in areas without constant power, which describes much of Nigeria and many other underserved regions.
Research and development on this battery-powered Pi node is currently underway, and we aim to have a working build ready to demonstrate at our next circle.
Zeqah Study Group
The new Zeqah structure has now been implemented and is being run with students at the University of Benin. This is real progress from design to active operation. We will be collecting feedback from the students at the end of the semester to refine and improve both the system and the structure.
Iris Project
Research on Iris, the wearable AI assistant for blind and visually impaired people, is still ongoing as the team continues working toward the next stage of the project.
Medical Support Fundraising
We also discussed the ongoing medical support fundraiser for one of our circle members, whose family is facing a serious health emergency. Members contributed in the best way they could through the FundBrave campaign. The campaign remains live, and any support helps: https://benin.fundbrave.com/
