Our second Logos Circle Aba gathering focused on Housing as our main winnable issue.
This Circle moved beyond discussion and addressed a real housing concern within the community. A lawyer who is also a member of our Circle led a sensitisation session for tenants and landlords on their rights and responsibilities, including tenancy agreements, rent, quit notices, and the proper steps to take when tenancy issues arise.
The meeting was held at the palace of the community Chief, bringing Circle members, tenants, landlords, and other community members together for an open discussion.
Housing as Our Winnable Issue
Housing remains one of the major challenges affecting people in our communities.
During our discussions, we looked at cases where tenants were being asked to leave without fully understanding their rights. Two members of our Circle had received one-month quit notices from their landlords even though they were yearly tenants.
Rather than simply discussing the issue, we decided to bring the affected tenants, landlords, and community members together to better understand the situation and work towards a solution.
Our lawyer spoke about:

The rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants.

The importance of proper tenancy agreements.

Quit notices and the proper procedures involved.

Rent payments and renewals.

Keeping rent receipts and other important documents.

How landlords and tenants can handle disagreements properly.

The importance of avoiding threats, intimidation, or unlawful eviction.

Where tenants and landlords can seek proper legal help when necessary.
The lawyer also committed to remain available to the community for further guidance and will provide simple booklets explaining the rights and responsibilities of both landlords and tenants.
A Direct Community Outcome
Two Circle members had received one-month quit notices in May, despite being yearly tenants.
Following the community engagement, both quit notices were reversed. The two tenants will remain in their homes, and three months’ rent was cancelled for each tenant.
Both landlords were present during the discussion, allowing the matter to be addressed openly and peacefully.
This was a direct outcome from a real issue affecting members of our Circle and the wider community.
For us, this is what a winnable issue should look like: identify a real local problem, bring the right people together, take practical action, and work towards a clear outcome.
We did not just talk about housing. We listened to the people involved and created an opportunity for the issue to be addressed.
It also reminded us that Logos Circle Aba is not only about meeting together. It is about showing up when people in our community need support.
Continuing the Housing Campaign
Housing will remain a major focus for Logos Circle Aba in August.
We will continue the awareness campaign to help tenants and landlords better understand their rights and responsibilities.
We will also identify tenants who are struggling to pay their rent and explore ways the Circle can support selected cases.
Our August Circle will therefore focus on practical support for people facing genuine rent difficulties, alongside continued housing rights awareness and community engagement.

We ended the gathering by sharing a meal with Circle members and other members of the community.
The meeting was simple, open, and practical. Most importantly, people left with a better understanding of their rights and a commitment to continue working together.
Our second Circle reminded us that change can start with something as simple as bringing the right people together, listening to the problem, and taking action.
We came together. We listened. We acted.
Logos Circle Aba will continue building from the ground up, one community and one winnable issue at a time.
