Introduction
Following two circle meetups in June and July, we decided that for August, rather than hold another meetup, we would take our meetup to the community through an outreach. On 29 August 2026, we carried out our first outreach visit to Success Orphanage Home in Pwadzu, Wukari. Sixteen of our members arrived around 1:00 pm and opened the visit with a prayer session before meeting with the matron to understand the home’s most pressing challenges.
Challenges Identified
The matron highlighted three major challenges currently facing the home:
-
Water supply: The home’s borehole has been damaged for some time and remains unrepaired, leaving the children without a reliable source of potable water.
-
Academic support: There is a need for private lessons for the teenagers, particularly a tutor to handle elementary mathematics and basic English.
-
Bed spacing: This is the home’s biggest challenge. About 23 children currently share just two bedrooms, with no mattresses or adequate bed spaces. The overcrowding has been worsened by the home’s role in also housing children from the neighboring Adamawa and Benue States, further straining its already limited space. During the hot season, the lack of spacing contributes to the spread of skin diseases among the children. There is also a need to separate the teenage boys from the girls to allow for privacy in their sleeping quarters.
What We Provided
-
Food items: bags of rice, spaghetti, pasta, soft drinks and biscuits
-
Hygiene supplies: detergents, hand sanitizers, and soap
-
Health protection: treated mosquito nets to help keep the children safe at night
-
Clothing: brand-new socks and clothes donated by our members
-
Academic support: we arranged two NYSC corps members who have agreed to volunteer as tutors for basic mathematics and English, pending resumption of school
What’s Next
-
We hope to raise funds for a follow-up visit to provide bunk beds and mattresses, easing the bed-spacing crisis
-
We will explore options to repair the damaged borehole, or as an interim measure, connect a tap water line from a neighboring source
-
We plan to align the follow-up visit with our September–October Back-to-School programme for efficient use of resources and volunteer time.
-
We plan to conduct a free medical checkup for the children, including HIV screening, genotype testing, and Hepatitis B screening
-
We plan to provide female teenagers with hygiene supplies such as sanitary pads and innerwears.
